Irisin: Does irisin burn fat?

Irisin what is this? Find out why scientists are inclined to believe that the hormone Irisin helps you lose weight forever, only scientific evidence. Everyone knows that to lose weight, it is enough to work with the indicator of the energy value of the nutrition program. However, for faster results, exercise is essential. Exercise not only speeds up the utilization of adipose tissue but also improves health. Today we will talk about a new substance that was discovered a few years ago – irisin, a hormone for fat burning.

The fat-burning hormone irisin  research results

In a study conducted in 2012, researchers discovered a new hormonal substance that the body produces under the influence of physical exertion. It is actively involved in burning fat stores and also helps to strengthen muscles. The new substance was named irisin – a fat-burning hormone for athletes.

Subsequent experiments, however, did not show such encouraging results, but rather. There were two such studies and they raised doubts about the methods used to detect the concentration of a substance in the blood. Meanwhile, the head of a team of scientists who were able to discover the fat-burning hormone irisin for athletes, Bruce Spiegelman said the reasons for the colleagues’ doubts.

In his opinion, this is due to the method that discovered the formation of material in the cellular structure of muscle tissue. Spiegelman, in collaboration with Stephen Gigi, used an innovative quantitative mass analysis method in his research. Therefore, they suggested that ATA be used in the production (translation) of irisin, instead of the ATG signal in the body.

It was the fact that the hormonal substance was formed by an ATA signal that prevented other scientists from finding the hormonal substance, which they perceived as disguised. From this, it was concluded that irisin cannot have a significant effect on the body. Today, scientists know only a few genes that use the ATA signal, but this fact cannot be a reason to refute their existence.

These substances are simply separated into a separate category as their molecular structure is very complex. The authors of the discovery say that the human fat-burning hormone for athletes, irisin, resembles a substance found in the body of rodents. In their opinion, a person’s blood always contains a few nanograms of the hormone, which in no way can diminish its importance to our body.

The same insulin may also be present in small doses, but it is not a question of its role in the functioning of the body. In response to criticism of the scientific world in their address, Harvard researchers have developed a system for measuring the levels of hormones in athletes’ blood. Gigi and Spiegelman were supported by independent researcher Francesco Celi at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center. He is confident that the new research methodology will prove that the fat-burning hormone irisin for athletes is present in human blood.

According to Selis, the method for determining the concentration of the hormonal substance is quite accurate. Scientists are also confident. The research in this direction must continue and first and foremost study the processes of the hormone. The most important thing is to determine how irisin can affect white and brown adipose tissue, as well as energy processes.

At this point, the discovery of a new hormonal substance is seen as a major breakthrough in the field of medicine. Remember that scientists have to uncover many secrets about the effects of exercise on the human body. The recently discovered athlete’s fat-burning hormone, irisin, will take another step towards success.

Studies in rodents have shown that the substance has a beneficial effect on blood composition and metabolic processes. As human research has not yet been done, it is too early to talk about the effects of the hormone on our bodies. It is safe to say that under the influence of intense exercise, the level of irisin in the blood increases significantly. Subsequent research will likely use a code of conduct developed by Harvard researchers.

However, the new method has a rather serious drawback – when preparing a blood sample for tests, parts of the hormone are broken down, which has a negative effect on the accuracy of the measurements. Gigi and his colleague are optimistic and are now working to improve their research rules.

The fat-burning hormone irisin: famous facts

In the tests in which mice participated, the substance could slow down the fat formation process by 20-60%. As we said above, now it is not necessary to draw broad conclusions and it is necessary to keep a cool head. It is possible that the fat-burning hormone irisin for athletes will be a great tool to fight overweight, but the opposite is also possible. Let’s talk about what has become known from rodent research.

Fat burning and other effects

Today, scientists attribute a lot of positive effects to irisin, for example:

  • The formation of cholesterol plaques on the walls of blood vessels should be slowed down, leading to a reduced risk of atherosclerosis.
  • Acceleration of metabolism and optimization of energy expenditure in the heart muscle.
  • Increased mitochondrial biogenesis.
  • Restoring the natural length of telomeres in cell types is extremely important in preventing many ailments, as well as slowing down the aging process.

Improve the diagnosis of disorders of the endocrine system

It is possible that the fat-burning hormone irisin for athletes in the future can be used to diagnose many disorders of the endocrine system. For example, the substance may be a sign of polycystic ovary syndrome in adolescent girls. As a result, doctors will have the opportunity to start treatment earlier.

Remember that this is a fairly common disease that is suffered by quite a few women of childbearing age. According to international health organizations, their number reaches 20 percent.

Among the main symptoms of the disease should be noted:

  • Ovulation problems.
  • Acceleration of testosterone production in the female body.
  • Increased insulin resistance.

Any problems with the functioning of the endocrine system in the female body can become a serious obstacle to normal ovulation. The newly discovered fat-burning hormone irisin for athletes can help diagnose this disease.

During adolescence, the levels of the hormone increase

Greek researchers conducted an experiment involving 23 teenage girls suffering from polycystic ovary syndrome, as well as 17 girls without similar health problems. Representatives of the first group showed not only increased testosterone levels but also irisin. Scientists will continue to study the role of the new hormone.

One of the most effective treatments for this disease is to reduce carbohydrates in your diet. As you know, this allows you to reduce the body’s insulin resistance, which is now considered one of the main reasons for the development of the disease.

Iris and brown adipose tissue

Today’s article is primarily devoted to the fat-burning properties of the new hormonal substance and it’s time to return to this issue. Researchers have found that iris, a fat-burning hormone for athletes, accelerate the conversion of white fat cells to brown ones. Let us remind you that these issues are not meant to store energy sources, but to burn them.

Based on available results from mouse studies, researchers have suggested that 50 grams of brown adipose tissue can burn about 20 percent of calories in food daily. This gives reason to talk about the very important role of brown fat in the fight against overweight.

The experiment revealed that there is a direct correlation between the activity of brown adipose tissue and the speed of metabolic processes.

In addition, it is assumed that in some categories of people the number of brown fat cells is significantly higher than in others:

  • The number of brown adipose tissue in the body of thin men is much higher compared to obese people.
  • At a young age, the amount of these tissues is higher.
  • The amount of brown fat affects the concentration of sugar in the blood.

Children have a lot of brown fat, which protects the baby body from hypothermia. As we age, the amount of tissue decreases, and they are mainly located in the neck and around the blood vessels to warm the blood. Researchers are confident that the amount of brown fat can be increased, for example by using cry therapy.

An interesting fact is that these types of tissues are in many ways similar to muscles in terms of their behavior. It is with this that scientists explain the ability of brown fat to accelerate the secretion of fat. Bruce Spiegelman is known in scientific circles not only for the fact that he was able to discover the fat-burning hormone irisin for athletes. He did considerable research on brown adipose tissue.

It was he who was able to find the substance PRDM16, which in the body is an activation process in the formation of brown fat. It controls the transformation of immature cellular structures into muscle fibers or brown fat. Another group of scientists was able to find another substance that is a kind of trigger for brown adipose tissue – BMP -7.

It is too early to draw conclusive conclusions about the role of irisin in the fight against obesity. Scientists will continue to work in this direction and we need to be patient. Finally, we note that according to one of the hypotheses, the fat-burning hormone irisin for athletes was created by the body as a protective substance against low ambient temperatures. When produced in muscle tissue, the hormonal substance accelerates the transformation of white fat cells into browns, which improves the body’s temperature control by burning large amounts of energy.
